Steam Still At Work (after August 1968) Part 1 (60-mins) Price £19.75

Our “Steam Still at Work” series of films (formerly called “Return to Steam”) features the steam scene during the “Wilderness Years” when main line steam was officially banned from British Railways after the end of steam in 1968. The ban ended with the “Return to Steam” tours in 1971. Here we follow how a typical enthusiast could find steam again, mainly in Great Britain.

It’s 11th August 1968 and we see 70013 “Oliver Cromwell” with that last BR steam hauled train on the Settle & Carlisle, followed by the last leg into Liverpool with 45110. Later the Pacific is seen running light engine to Norwich. Earlier in 1968, 9F 92203 is seen en route to Longmoor for preservation along with 75029, the first steam on the Southern since July 1967. At Barry scrapyard there are rows of mostly now preserved steam. But at Cashmores none survived and at Cohen’s Yard, Kettering, the scrap man is busy….

However hundreds of engines could still be seen at work on industrial sites. We feature many scenes including unique Beyer-Garratt “William Francis” and 0-6-0STs fly-shunting at Hadley Colliery. We even see ex-BR tank engines such as 3F 47745 at Williamthorpe Colliery and ex-GWR Panniers both at South Wales collieries and in daily use on London Transport. We visit Northern Ireland to see “Jeep” 2-6-4Ts on passenger and motorway construction trains.

Overseas also became a popular destination, especially when as close as Calais and Boulogne where Pacifics still hauled trains including the GOLDEN ARROW. There were years of steam traction left in Germany and most of Europe; even behind the Iron Curtain for the adventurous few. Further away was South Africa for main line double headers and Garratts! /p

Back in the UK, a few preserved railways had started up and there is rare footage of the early days on the Bluebell, Keighley, Middleton, Severn Valley and Dart Valley railways. Over on the Lochty Private Railway, we see 60009 and a matching beaver-tail observation coach! We tour the various narrow gauge and miniature lines with a variety of scenes including a BR blue Vale-of-Rheidol, the Talyllyn with “Dolgoch” and the Ffestiniog with “Prince” hauling trains.

On the mainlines, 4472 still had a further year and occasionally other preserved engines strayed on to BR tracks if you knew about it. Our series is an in depth look at all of this. Part 1 is only an introduction to memories of steam from over 40 years ago. We close with a “Return to Steam” special in October 1971 with 6000 “King George V” hauling the Bulmers Pullman train , 4472 at Kings Cross and, for contrast, 45110 hauling last BR steam train on 11th.August 1968.

All the archive film used is in colour and an extensively researched commentary and authentic soundtrack has been added.

Cumberland Glory (60-mins) Price £19.75

“Cumberland Glory” is the story of the railways around Cumberland’s border city of Carlisle. Citadel station witnessed the passing of many trains, among them the “Royal Scot”, “Mid-day Scot” and “Waverley”. Motive power included Princess Coronation Pacifics, Jubilees, Black Fives and Patriots. Railtours brought in locomotives from all the big four companies as well as Scottish preserved engines such as “Glen Douglas” and Caley Single No.123. Gresley A4′s came from the Waverley Route. Kingmoor Shed is visited portraying normal working locomotives and the visitors off of railtours. Its turntable played host to a Western A2 Pacific “Blue Peter” during the period covered in this video which begins in 1962. Branches and main lines radiating from Carlisle are visited, including Silloth and Langholm. There is magnificent action from the Settle and Carlisle line and the West Coast main line over Shap. The transition to diesel traction prior to eventual electrification in 1974 is seen with locomotives such as Class 40s and 50s plus the Royal Train. From heavy freight to 46238 “City of Carlisle” cleaned for football special, from an immaculate “Glen Douglas” to a 9F struggling to Ais Gill, it is all in this story. Much of the film, in both black and white and colour, was shot by local enthusiast Brian Irwin.

Steam North of Carlisle (60-mins) Price £19.75

This video looks at the steam scene north of Carlisle and the area covered includes the climb to Beattock summit. The start is at Carlisle Citadel station and includes a visit to Kingmoor shed for Scot, Clan and B1 classes, for this was a time before the Waverley route closed. Border branches around the city are visited including Silloth, Alston and Langholm before moving on to the Port road to Stranraer viewing Dumfries, Newton Stewart and Kirkcudbright. We move on to Ayr, visiting the shed and their workings to the local collieries in the hands of Crab 2-6-0’s. Also featured are Mauchline, Killoch and Waterside. Along the Ayrshire coast we arrive at Gourrock on our way to the West Coast Main Line approaches to Glasgow Central via Motherwell. All four main routes into Glasgow are seen. Ex-Caley engines still exist with Cowlairs bank echoing to the sound of steam and the preserved Scottish locos are seen touring the system. Besides the usual Stanier and Standard classes, we feature five A4’s, three Duchesses, a WD on passenger duty, an A2 and a Jubilee; a feast of steam in an area never before covered in such length and detail. The majority of the film used in this video was taken by Geoff Lumb of Hudderfield who has had many photographs published in railway books and magazines. We have brought it all to life with superb sound and informative commentary. Two minutes of black & white film has been included into what is otherwise a full colour production.

Southern Pride (60-mins) Price £19.75

The Southern Railway was the smallest of the “Big Four” but its locomotives could hold their own against anything on the other three and in some cases certainly out-perform them. This video shows them in action from film shot by Jim Oatway in 1961 and 1962 when although Bulleid Pacifics were the main players on the Southern scene, after all there were 140 of them, the last of the Lord Nelsons, King Arthurs and Schools were still at work.

We see them on the ex-LSWR route out of Waterloo on weekdays and summer Saturdays, on expresses and Basingstoke semi-fasts. Alongside this action, freight to and from Feltham and Nine Elms yards was worked by Maunsell S15′s, Bulleid Q1′s and the inevitable U and N class Moguls.

A visit to Feltham shed shows us in great detail the massive H16, G16 and W class heavy tank locos, not just a glimpse but long detailed views you can appreciate.

The rural charm of the Hayling Island Branch and workings on the Isle-of-Wight in 1962 at Ryde lead into never to be repeated scenes of Haywards Heath when the famous “Bluebelle” specials ran with preserved motive power on the main line using locos T9 No.120, Caley Single No.123, “Birch Grove” and the Adams Radial No.488.

Steam Remembrance (60-mins) Price £19.75

If you want steam in its last glorious year then this production will delight. No, not 1967, but 1964 when so many loved classes went from the scene.

The film taken so well by Bob Todd and seen by many at railway meetings around the country will interest many who mourn the loss of steam traction. Bob used an all lines railrover to visit such locations as Paddington for Panniers, 61xx and Castle classes, even a condensing pannier tank. Exeter for four engines on the Meldon Quarry stone train, Wadebridge for 1366 class and the North Cornwall line to Okehampton. Yeovil for 6430 and push-pull working to Sherborne and a railtour to Hereford with 5054 preclude a visit to the Cromford and High Peak line with ex-LMS 47006.

On via York with B16, 04, WD to Scotland. Thornton Junction had B1, V2, J38 and J37. Six different A4s are seen at Aberdeen, Perth and Stirling along with three Princess Coronation Pacifics in their last working week, green and maroon. Britannia 70035 puts in an appearance with Jubilee, Standard Class 5s and ex-LMS Black 5s. Bob’s failed DMU is rescued by a B1.

The film ends with a journey to Carlisle with now preserved 70013 ‘‘Oliver Cromwell’’. With nearly 90 different engines of 30 classes this is a superb compilation of 1964.

Archive Newsreel 2 (55-mins) Price £15

The second video in the series offers a further multitude of fascinating subjects in nine sections. We begin with a look at the 9Fs on British Railways (including the ex-Crosti type) and 92203 and 92220 on railtours in the 70′s. Others are seen around Warrington and the Lune Gorge. The Marlow Donkey was famous in Great Western history and was re-lived in 1973 using 1450, 6106 and 6998 on the branch from Maidenhead to Marlow via Bourne End. When main line steam on BR came to an end in 1968, many farewell specials were run and we next include two of them, the Lancastrian No.2 Railtour and an SLS tour from Stockport to Carnforth using Britannia 70013 and Black Fives 45156 and 44949. Narrow gauge working is depicted by scenes on the Bowaters Paper Mills in Kent before closure. The scenes contrast the locomotives working days with the pleasure they now give to passengers at Whipsnade. There is a tribute to steam power out of Waterloo in 1967. Featured are the Bournemouth Belle, an immaculate 34057 (as only Salisbury shed could do), 75069 (now preserved on the SVR), Bullied Pacifics, Standard 5s, 80xxx and 82xxx tanks. The steam shed visited on the volume is Stockport Edgeley showing Stanier Class 5′s and 8F’s in their natural environment, the motive power depot and the men who worked on them while they were turned and coaled. The continental section shows Pacific power with action from France and Germany which lasted some years after the end of steam in the UK. Both preserved continental pacifics at Carnforth are seen in action in 1976 and the French Pacific at the head of the Golden Arrow leaving Calais Maritime. Hof, Trier, Crailsheim, Lathen and Berlin feature 01 and 03 classes at work. WD 2-10-0 “Gordon” is shown over the last 25-years from its rare appearance on the Southern Region in 1966 through its days at Longmoor to its visit to Shildon and preservation on the Severn Valley Railway. We conclude with industrial steam at Shilbottle Colliery in Northumberland where 0-6-0 tanks worked hard on the three mile branch of the NCB in 1969. Again another good mix of steam traction in full variety from the humble colliery tank to the great expresses of yesteryear.

Steam Recollections (60-mins) Price £15

The second of our productions from Cohn White’s excellent 8mm film collection. Much of the action whisks us back to the last valiant days of the B.R. steam engine, and locomotives of all regions feature. Originated on 8mm cine and transferred to low-band Umatic, fully sound-tracked, this full colour film will delight and captivate all steam enthusiasts.

Section 1:- (14 mins) – Steam operations centred around Weymouth, Upwey Wishing Well Halt and Radipole in 1966. This heavily graded section of the old GWR/LSWR Jnt. Railway from Dorchester severely tested the Bulleids, Standards, and ex-LMS locomotives on this line at the time.

Section 2:- (8 mins) – Shap – The last Autumn, the mass drafting of virtually the entire Britannia fleet to Kingmoor gave rise to new possibilities to capture this elegant class roaring up and down the North West main line. Nine of the class feature.

Section 3:- (12 mins) – LNER engines were rarely filmed, we’ve a few in the shape of a couple of Named B1s, a J37 & J38 (and a non LNER WD!) preceding 60024 in 1966. 60009 brings us into preserved times as we study some of the less known locos; 65033, 61572, 65462, 69023 (on the Derwent Valley line), and we follow 69621 on her trip from Leeds to the Stour Valley Railway.

Section 4:- (9 mins) – Flying Scotsman is undoubtably the most famous LNER engine, this Historical sequence reveals her activities in 1968; preparations at Finsbury Park; departure from Kings Cross 1st May on the 40th anniversary of her non-stop run to Edinburgh; other shots near Hitchin, Hadley Wood, Brookmans Park and Hornsey.

Section 5:- (9 mins) – Ex GWR 0-6-0 Panniers were sold to London Transport, to work out of Neasden. We follow the escapades of a number of these popular tanks on the Croxley Green Rubbish Tip run!

Section 6:- (8 mins) – This final section portrays the Victorian elegance of the Stirling Single, GNR No.1 during her brief sojourn on the Main Line Steam Trust at Loughborough in 1981.

Steam Survival (60-mins) Price £15

Colin White has been intensively filming steam from the mid 1960s throughout the UK capturing not only BR steam from most regions, but many early special workings and preserved lines. Fascinating material from the industrial scene as well as a wealth of footage of European and former Eastern Block countries. Originated on Standard 8mm film and transferred to Umatic low band video, expertly sound-tracked, this 1 hour full colour film illustrates the fascination of his work.

Section 1:- (10-mins) – Shap 1967 with steam desperately hanging on, Standard Class 4s being prepared at Tebay as bankers, Stanier 5s and Britannias, all in action including 70033 picking up water at Dillicar troughs, and 46485 with the divisional managers special at Scout Green.

Section 2:- (12-mins) – The Southern in 1966, loco preparation at Nine Elms, turning & coaling. Activity at Waterloo. ECS workings behind 2-6-4 Standard tanks and Bulleids roaring through. Clapham, Raynes Park and New Malden. Several unrebuilds feature and 35014 draws the elegant “Bournemouth Belle” on to its destination.

Section 3:- (20-mins) – A fascinating section of Special Tours mostly on the Southern with 60024 Waterloo-Weymouth, 3442 being prepared at Nine Elms for her stint on SR metals, double-headers include 31639/31411, 31639/33006!, 34057/34102 (both unrebuilt) , 30069/30064. Also 60532 on SR * LMR with 9610/9630 double heading near Wrexham as well as a few others.

Section 4:- (7-mins) – Didcot in 1969 a delightful few minutes watching GWR 0-4-2T 1466 scurrying around the yard even up to the coaling stage. 6106 stretches her legs amongst the now common Class 47’s.

Section 5:- (10-mins) – Corby steam. A glimpse of the hard worked tanks at this now long gone works in Northamptonshire. APCM at Swanscombe follows with tanks 2 & 3 trying hard to stay on the tracks as they transport lime to the kilns. The CEGB Rye House Power Station concludes the section with RSH 0-6-0T doing the shunting.
