The fourth in our popular electric and diesel miscellany series. Although the “classic traction” seen in this series is “modern” compared to “steam traction” it should be remembered that much of the footage is 50 years or more older having been taken during the period from the 1960s to the 1980s. Most of the scenes selected have not been previously seen. As before with these films, we have simply compiled them in no particular order and thus a few surprises will be in store as you enjoy the video.

A vast area of the country is covered from HSTs and Class 50s in the West Country, to the Midlands at Wichnor sidings, Bescot and then across to Norwich, with numerous other locations in between including Cosford and the Madeley route.

We watch high speed operations on both the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and West Coast Main Line (WCML) before moving southwards to Stonehouse Junction on the Birmingham to Bristol main line for scenes including glimpses in the signal box and a Class 14 on the nearby Nailsworth branch (closed in 1966).

A couple of rail incidents are covered at Catholme Level Crossing and near Lichfield, followed by a visit to Derby Works during the 1968 Open day.

More action is seen on the Great Western Main Line at Reading, Taplow and Acton. In London, we visit King’s Cross, St Pancras and Waterloo.

Northwards again for footage around Shrewsbury which includes a couple of Crewe test trains. The reopening of Barmouth Bridge is also touched on, plus a few scenes from around the long demolished Buxton Lime Works. Manchester Victoria is also visited.

Classes covered include Brush Type 4s in both two-tone green and corporate blueliveries, English Electric Type 4s, again in green and blue plus we cover their last days in service in 1984. Blue Pullmans are seen as well as their HST successors. AC Electrics are in in action as well as Deltics at King’s Cross and at speed on the main line.

Passenger and freight trains pass by, including a number of car­carriers. We see Classes 03, 08, 14, 20, 31, 33, 35, 37, 40, 44, 45, 47, 50, 52, 55, 73, 74 and virtually all the AC electric types. A couple of steam shots are added for further interest. One or two DMU/EMU scenes are included and a finally a couple of shots include the rarely seen Brake Tenders.

The archive film is mostly in colour An authentic sound track has been added along with a commentary to complement this further nostalgic look at the last years of Great Western steam.

With the plethora of main line and branch line steam film footage from the 1960s, the co-existing but equally fascinating industrial steam scene in Britain is often neglected. It is easy to forget that it continued until around 1980. Although we have featured some scenes of industrial steam in other volumes, our last dedicated volume to Industrial Steam was way back in 1997 with our Volume 52! Here we have further look at industrial steam at work in England and Scotland from 1960 to 1980, this time mostly featuring the larger locomotives which worked at collieries and iron stone mines. These locomotives were usually built by private builders, although some ex-BR tank classes were used. The North East and Midland areas are well covered and there are many scenes of long gone engines working in an industrial environment now often vanished. Many of these engines survived into the preservation era and were eventually saved from oblivion. It is only fitting that we conclude our video with 2011 views of a selection of these industrial locomotives at work on preserved lines such as the Tanfield, Foxfield and Blaenavon railways.

All the footage is in colour and the film has an extensively researched commentary with an authentic sound track.

An archive programme of the CREWE to HOLYHEAD route via CHESTER and BANGOR. Filmed from 1960 to 1967 with occasional 1980’s visits from preserved steam locomotives providing a contrast. Motive power is mainly London Midland Region with Western Region at Chester. Branches from the route include BIRKENHEAD via HOOTON, the DYSERTH branch from PRESTATYN, DENBIGH from MOLD and RHYL, BLAEANAU FFESTINIOG and TRAWSFYNDD from LLANDUDNO JUNCTION and the AMLYCH branch.

The PORT PENRHYN slate quarries to BETHESDA and DINORWIC system are also seen with narrow gauge locomotives.

Locations visited include CREWE, CHESTER, SALTNEY JUNCTION, FLINT, TALACRE, RHYL, ABERGELE, LLANDUDNO, LLANDUDNO JUNCTION, BANGOR, MENAI BRIDGE and HOLYHEAD.

Motive power includes Princess Coronations, Royal Scots, Jubilees, Britannias, Black 5s, 8Fs, Standard Classes and early diesels of Class 40 and 47, usually in green livery.

Using all archive film taken over many years up to 1980, this film covers the operations on the LONDON TRANSPORT network on rail and road. Metropolitan Railways are seen with steam at Rickmansworth in 1961 taking over from electric locos. Lots of coverage of the LT pannier tanks at NEASDEN, CROXLEY, WATFORD, FARRINGDON and LILLIE BRIDGE. The Metropolitan electric locomotive tours of 1972. Tube trains of ‘Q’ stock, ’38′ stock on the Northern Line and A62 stock on the Epping to Ongar line and others.

Road transport covers trams, trolleybuses in EDMONTON and some ex LT vehicles in Spain. Horse buses back on the London streets in 1979 with their history mixing with a few preserved examples of early motor buses. The RT buses in central London up to the last on Route 62 at BARKING. RLH types in East London and Routemasters including FRM1 at POTTERS BAR. WR. Witness a visit to ALDENHAM WORKS and the skid pan at CHISWICK with an RT. LONDON COUNTRY routes with green RT, RML, RMC and RF. GREEN LINE with RM’s and RP’s around HARLOW. There are all-over advert liveried Routemasters, Silver Jubilee and Shoplinkers examples. RTW’s at NIAGARA FALLS. A very nostalgic period remembered of LONDON TRANSPORT’s history.

Filmed virtually all in excellent colour, with a sound track and informative commentary.

Shrewsbury-Ruabon-Barmouth.

A second volume of our land cruise around the Cambrian Mountains. This journey continues from SHREWSBURY to BARMOUTH via RUABON, LLANGOLLEN and DOLGELLAU.

Extensive coverage of SHREWSBURY is seen in the early 1960’s at the station and a detailed look at steam locomotives on Coleham sheds. Here LMS and GWR engines were serviced from Panniers to Black 5s, Manors and Granges. The station saw Jubilees and through and transfer freights behind 28xx, Manors, and Halls. Journey north via LEATON BASCHURCH and GOBOWEN with diversions to WHITCHURCH and OSWESTRY. A visit to IFTON colliery and CHIRK to RUABON. Sun and snow at LLANGOLLEN LINE JUNCTION. Continue down the Dee Valley via LLANGOLLEN. Here we see how it used to be in the 1960’s and comparative views of the preserved line from LLANGOLLEN to CARROG using 1980’s and 1990’s views of visiting engines to this railway. Some home based engines as well! On to BALA and DOLGELLAU in 1964. Finally MORFA MAWDDACH and BARMOUTH, even track recovery trains on the Dee valley route that closed in 1965.

Motive power seen includes Manors, Granges, Halls, 28xx, 2251, Panniers and 43xx. LMS Black 5s, Jubilee, 8Fs and 2MT, backed up by a few Standard Classes. The scenery on this route is again superb forming a great backdrop for the steam action on these main and secondary lines. Some views date from 1959, one from 1930, in this comprehensive account of the line from SHREWSBURY to BARMOUTH via the Dee Valley.
